As people from the village of Collinwood started to rush to the school in a desperate attempt to save the children, a bottleneck that was formed by an architectural decision made two years earlier was causing child upon child to fall just feet from safety. The intense smoke, heat, and flames pushed back rescuers with almost supernatural force.

One hundred seventy-three children and two adults would burn to death in a matter of minutes.
